Madagascar hissing Cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa)
These roaches are found on the African tropical island of Madagascar.
Males are about the same size as the females but the males have
two large bumps on their prothorax. Females lack these bumps.
Their adult body length is about 3". They are wingless so
they can't fly like most cockroaches. This also makes them more
appetizing to reptiles. The hissing sound is their only defense
mechanism and is made when they move air through special valves
in their abdomen.
When kept at warm temperatures, the young can reach adult size
in 3-8 months. These hissing critters can live and reproduce for
1-3 years.
Keep them as pets or use them for food
